Baybayin is the pre-Hispanic syllabary script used by Filipinos to write down Philippine languages like Tagalog or Iloco. Filipino languages are now written in a modified version of the Latin alphabet as a result of Spanish colonization and European influence.
Although mostly used as a decorative or aesthetic addition to artworks such as calligraphic arts or tattoos in the present, Baybayin can still be fully utilised to write modern Filipino languages. WFC is proud to host a Baybayin writing workshop for interested community members to share the art of the ancient syllabary to a new audience.
When: May 31, 2025 / 1:00 PM to 3:00 PM
Where: BNRC Makerspace Classroom
Registration Fee: $5.00

Our facilitator will be Hannah Delos Reyes, a local artist and instructor at the Art Gallery of Southwestern Manitoba.
Our Baybayin fonts for the workshop are based on the works of Lloyd Zapanta (lloydiecat) a Philippine-based digital artist, illustrator, and freelancer.

Filipinos are known for treasuring their cultural heritage. When the first batches of Filipinos came to Westman decades ago they brought with them stories of their hometowns and families left behind.
In this project by WFC, we try to trace the hometowns of our community members and trace the ethnic and cultural backgrounds of our community members.
