WFC celebrated Thanksgiving Day 2025 with a series of events last Saturday. The day began with an energetic Zumba session with instructor-extrordinaire, Lucia Bravo and a Line dance dancing lesson.
The community also listened in on real estate sessions hosted by representatives of AyalaLand International Sales Inc. and Royal Lepage Martin Liberty, this was followed by a presentation by Community Futures Westman showcasing their new lending circles programme supported by Prairies Economic Development Canada.
The day was finally capped by a generous Thanksgiving potluck courtesy of the many members of WFC. In attendance were also members of HAMI (Hispanic Association of Manitoba Inc.) and other community groups.

The Philippine Consulate General of Toronto and the SSS Toronto Office, along with the Honourary Philippine Consulate of Winnipeg conducted a consular outreach in Brandon yesterday at the North End Community Centre with Westman Filipino Community providing logistical and volunteer support.
16 members of the Filipino-Canadian Community took their oaths as dual-citizens of Canada and the Philippines after a short but solemn programme presided over by Consul Rodney Sumague. Guests of honour: Brandon Mayor Jeff Fawcett and Minister Glen Simard attended the event and gave short but inspiring messages for attendees to continue contributing to the growth of their communities here in Canada and back home in the Philippines.
Other services provided in the 'one-stop-shop' mission included: passport applications and renewals, consular notary services, SSS services, NBI security clearances and more. More outreach services are being held in Winnipeg until Monday and a planned outreach in Portage La Prairie in November (final details to be released by the consulate).

WFC held its third annual Volleyball Tournament last Saturday which saw players from Brandon, Neepawa, and Gladstone competing to be this year's Sunrise Credit Union tournament champions.
This year saw 30 players showing of their skills and teamwork throughout the day as the event caps off WFC's 2025 Summer Sportsfest season.
Coming out as champion is Team Titan, Team Milo at 2nd and Team Avengers at 3rd.

WFC's community officers: Lovelia Elizalde (Finance Officer) and Myra Merino (Vice-President) have decided to step down for the remainder of their term for personal reasons. We would also like to thank them for their hard work and efforts in making our community great.
In light of these changes, WFC will not be having community officers, other than the president, until the next set of elections after the AGM at the start of the new fiscal year in April 2026. Current officers/directors may serve up to two consecutive terms.

It has come to the attention of WFC that someone or some people are going around the Brandon area soliciting funds for the recent flooding back in the Philippines, and introducing themselves as members or representatives of WFC. Or, in one report, are fundraising for WFC.
WFC is currently not doing nor has it authorized its members to fundraise on its behalf for the recent events. Please exercise caution and contact WFC if you see suspicious activities.
WFC will always announce fundraising events in advance through our official website, social media, or through our email listings.

On Saturday, WFC hosted its first table tennis open camp with folks from the Manitoba Table Tennis Association headed by its executive director, Carlos Cuadra.
WFC members and participants were instructed in basic drills, spins, and playing techniques by the coaches. Members of the MTTA then had an exhibition match demonstrating higher level playing skills and styles. The camp participants then challenged each of the MTTA coaches in receiving serves and playing with them in single set matches. All participants were awarded each a table tennis paddle for their participation.

WFC launches its Sportsfest 2025 with a community Zumba and Coffee as well as line dance session on August 5, 2025.
This was followed by a community Badminton tournament presented by Donald and Kehler Law Office. WFC thanks all participants and congratulates all the winners of the Badminton tournament.
The upcoming sportsfest events include Table Tennis on August 23 and Volleyball on August 30.

WFC, in partnership with the Brandon Kings Chess Association and the Winnipeg Chess Association through the initiative of WFC Director Dr. Gilbert 'Bong' Perez, held its first summer chess rapid tournament in Brandon's North End community Centre on July 5.
Players from Brandon, Neepawa, Winnipeg, and even as far as Regina attended! The day started with an oath to sportsmanship and the competition had two divisions: adults and juniors/youth.
Players also had a taste of different Filipino dishes during the lunch break. WFC and its participating partners would like to congratulate all that participated in the event!

Brandon's Filipino community celebrates 2025 Filipino heritage month through several events in the city.
The festivities were kicked off by a Baybayin writing workshop on May 31st, A flag raising ceremony at City Hall attended by members of WFC, Mayor Jeff FAwcett, MLAs Glen Simmard and Wayne Balcaen, and Terry witners (Representing MP Grant Jackson), and other members of the wider community.
On the same day, the Art Gallery of Southwestern Manitoba launched an exhibit by Clemente Villamayor at the AGSM gallery in the downtown.
Festivities climaxed on June 14th with the 3rd Barrio Fiesta celebration, the 1st WFC fundraising walkathon, Zumba at the Park, and a rocking performance by the band: Gambala.

Directors and members of Westman Filipino Community Inc. attended the launch of this year's Filipino Heritage Month at the provincial legislative assembly.
Headed by the teams of Malaya Marcelino, MP for Notre-Dame and Jelynn Dela Cruz MLA for Radisson, the event highlighted the continuing contributions of the Filipino community towards the continued growth of the Province. Although not there in-person, premier Wab Kinew delivered a video message to the crowd.
In particular highlight during the event was the poetry reading of "Balikbayan Box", a poem written by WFC community member Rafael Palma, an English major studying at Brandon University.
The event concluded with a luncheon showcasing classic Filipino food such as pancit, lumpia, and kakanin desserts.

The WFC board would like to give a big thank you to its outgoing directors and officers: Katrina Casulla, Sheryl Estillore, Roland Liwanag, Elisa Sapitula (Ex-officio/Fmr. President), Rosebelle Perez (Board Treasurer), Lovelia Elizalde (Community Finance Officer), and Myra Merino (Community Vice President).
By board resolution on April 5, 2025 in the Annual General Meeting, the Board elevated Shine Reyes (Community Secretary) as a new member of the Board of Directors.
WFC will be looking for applications for Directors until April 25. The Board will conduct the election of the Board officers in its regular meeting in May.
